The Best Places to Work in Government

A new site, Best Places to Work, ranks federal agencies based on the job satisfaction of government workers. It has been launched jointly by the Partnership for Public Service and an institute at American University. The site is based on a survey regarding "federal employers of choice" which was taken in 2002 by the Office of Personnel Management. There are plans to update the site possibly as early as mid-2005.

Of particular interest to students and new grads are the ratings from younger federal employees (aged 40 or less). Their "10 top" picks included NASA, the National Science Foundation, the General Services Administration, the Department of Transportation, and the Office of Personnel Management. NASA is, in fact, an agency ranked #1 in nearly every breakdown. It's not surprising that their mission "to explore the universe" motivates employees. In addition to various ranked listings of agencies and subagencies, bestplacestowork.org provides agency profiles, interesting facts (i.e. states with the most federal jobs), diversity background, an analysis of the most predominate professions in the organizations, etc. You'll find info there on more than 200 federal entities. "These new rankings are a great tool for jobseekers of all types, from brand new college grads, to people of color, to working moms," noted Kevin Simpson, Executive V.P. of the Partnership for Public Service.
